Petesea,
What motivated Kate to think that she should investigate the murder of her best friend's husband? She was an Olympic soccer player turned sports reporter who wanted to be an investigator when she was a kid and her Dad is a police officer, are those enough qualifications? I think not。 I was halfway through this book thinking that I do not care about the characters and this preposterous Kate as investigator approach。 But, I wanted to see how it ended and that was not fulfilling for me。 What motivated Kate to think that she should investigate the murder of her best friend's husband? I enjoyed this fast paced novel that had me guessing!
Staci,
I really enjoyed this book! Super quick, lots of turns and potential suspects, and a cliffhanger ending making me already excited for the sequel in 2024!
Robert Kulchar,
Interesting story。 I liked the changing paths the writer took to lead the reader in different directions。 I enjoyed the book and believe a lot of things can be done in future stories with these characters。Good job!! I look to reading many more adventures of Kate Green。
Carol,
Death and intrigue tempts the protagonist to delve into a little sleuthing to support her friend。 This was an interesting read - but with a few more side relationships than were needed for the plot。 No one comes out totally unscathed。

3。5 stars。 Another First Reads choice。 Mixed feelings, and a bit of a stretch but a decent read。 This story moves in several different directions and is all over the place。 Kate, a disgraced sports reporter, is trying to be there for her best friend/Yvette, whose husband is murdered。 She's also trying to get her job back, console her best friend, deal with her twins issues (son had a drug overdose) & she has a difficult ex。 She's also estranged from her dad, a NYC detective。 As the story unfolds 3。5 stars。 Another First Reads choice。 Mixed feelings, and a bit of a stretch but a decent read。 This story moves in several different directions and is all over the place。 Kate, a disgraced sports reporter, is trying to be there for her best friend/Yvette, whose husband is murdered。 She's also trying to get her job back, console her best friend, deal with her twins issues (son had a drug overdose) & she has a difficult ex。 She's also estranged from her dad, a NYC detective。 As the story unfolds, Kate has run all over town and stuck her nose in everyone she knows business。 She takes it upon herself to single-handedly prove her friend's innocence。 Seemed a bit far-fetched, but the main detective here is a real tool, and Kate's dad's not all that forthcoming。 So what's a best friend to do? Crime solve! While I was frustrated by the roundabout way this story unfolded, I still never had a clue who the murderer might turn out to be。 Enjoyed the surprise and the twist。 This is the first book of a series。 Curious if book 2 will focus on crime in the sports world or on Kate being a self-appointed detective。 🤷♀️ 。。。more

Fun little romp of a murder mysteryMurder and mayhem with a couple of crooked cops jumping to conclusions make for good entertainment。 While the gotcha moment was too easy, I still liked the book。 Definitely good for October fireside indulgence。

3。3I always struggle when an amateur attempts to solve a crime and somehow doesn't get killed or in trouble and solves the crime。 The author did a decent job setting up why, but still never feels realistic。 Book had a decent number of ways to distract you from who actually killed the basketball player, but you don't feel particularly close to any of the characters。 That said, I'd like to know Kate Green a bit more before I make my final decision on her! 。。。more

Lights Out is a light read。 How is a murder mystery a light read? The main focus of the story is the main character's personal life, so the murder takes a backseat。 The author explores the struggles of cooperative parenting and small-town gossip。 Bonus: The chapters are short with the average being about a ten-minute read (for me)。 The book takes no effort to read。 Now, there are some drawbacks to this。 The story does not stay with me, and I do not think through it throughout my day。 It is confu Lights Out is a light read。 How is a murder mystery a light read? “Lights Out” is a faced paced debut novel from author Elise Hart Kipness。 This novel grabs your attention on the first page and keeps you guessing throughout。 Kipness’s background provides a unique perspective that I really enjoyed learning more about。 The books does throw a lot of details on the table in the first half of the book that felt like walking through a haunted house where around every corner something else jumps out at you。 This kept the suspense ramped up。 But by the second half, as “Lights Out” is a faced paced debut novel from author Elise Hart Kipness。 This novel grabs your attention on the first page and keeps you guessing throughout。 Kipness’s background provides a unique perspective that I really enjoyed learning more about。 The books does throw a lot of details on the table in the first half of the book that felt like walking through a haunted house where around every corner something else jumps out at you。 This kept the suspense ramped up。 But by the second half, as suspects and motives get ruled out, the book settled into its own。 This is a great fall themed quick read for those who enjoy mysteries, thrillers, or police procedural。 。。。more

Amy,
The protagonist Kate was very unlikable & "not like other girls" in the beginning, but she did get less annoying as the book went on, so that's a plus。 I felt that the identity of the killer was way too predictable。 The pacing was terrible。。。we learn who the killer is 93% of the way through the book and the protagonist is in peril for all of 3 pages。 The last 6% does include a twist, but even it's predictable。 The ending of the book is a snoozefest that just seems to be setting up the sequel。 The protagonist Kate was very unlikable & "not like other girls" in the beginning, but she did get less annoying as the book went on, so that's a plus。 I felt that the identity of the killer was way too predictable。 The pacing was terrible。。。we learn who the killer is 93% of the way through the book and the protagonist is in peril for all of 3 pages。 The last 6% does include a twist, but even it's predictable。 The ending of the book is a snoozefest that just seems to be setting up the sequel。 。。。more

I loved Kate, and from the first few pages, I was hooked on her story! Although there are quite a few characters, they all added to the story and were relatively easy to keep straight。 I love crime fiction too, and this was an expert blend of it while still being a page-turning thriller。 I don’t think I have ever read a story with athletes at its center and that was a refreshing change of pace too。 Admittedly, I don’t know much about sports but no worries; you don’t have to be an athlete to enjoy a page-turning thriller about athletes!
